Music to my ears: The songs have consistently been one of the best parts of "Boardwalk." The singer performing at the end of the episode? That's Sophie Tucker (played by Kathy Brier, left), known as "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas." If you watched, you'll see why. I don't need a whole episode about him, but he needs a bit more fleshing out. Interesting stuff, but the Commodore is one of the most underwritten characters in the show.

In the episode, Kaestner formulates a plan to install a new mayoral candidate and urges Nucky to find a replacement for his ailing brother as sheriff.

The Commodore: I'm a little tired of these fleeting glimpses of Nucky mentor Commodore Louis Kaestner (Dabney Coleman). Other highlights from Belle Femme Threesome: Just how awkward was it watching Angela Darmody make out with both the photographer and his wife? Also, has the "Everyone in Paris is doing it" line ever worked? Ew. And watching Nucky get his vengeful side on. But it's going to be fun watching them try. I'm hoping it doesn't draw out slowly over these next few episodes, because I don't believe for a second that the messy D'allesios (with the stupid Mickey Doyle) could ever win. Would you want to be a Van Alden subordinate all your life? This all is neatly setting us up for a final Nucky Clan (with "Man in the Iron Mask" Richard Harrow) vs. But it was another surprising turn of events. They get help from an unlikely source - Van Alden's long-suffering assistant, Agent Sebso, who eventually kills Billy as he's being transported "to where Nucky can't get at him." It looks as though Nucky (or something close to Nucky) has convinced Sebso to help them - it's never made clear. Nucky visits Jimmy in jail and says he just needs to be patient. Jimmy thinks Van Alden has nothing on him - until he sees that his friend Billy has turned informant. He goes back and forth between asking Jimmy about the murders in the woods (Jimmy says he was at a movie), then about Margaret Schroeder (Van Alden - obsessed with Margaret as always), then about Lucy, then about Nucky and Margaret and finally back to the woods. Another highlight of this slow-mover was the weird and tense interrogation between Van Alden and Jimmy. But Jimmy's arrested by Van Alden and Luciano gets away. He stumbles awkwardly back into the arms of Angela, requests that they have another baby and then confronts Luciano after he has sex with the cunning Gillian, who betrays her new lover. Luciano is still lurking about to assist. Rothstein has enlisted the brothers to help set up a scotch-smuggling business out of Atlantic City (the unholy alliance is at right). He accepts Nucky's offer to come home to Chicago to help get rid of the D'allesios once and for all. And likely even more focused now on taking merciless revenge on all the D'allesios.

But the look on Nucky's face is priceless - he's not scared, just shocked. A young woman is shot in the chest, Margaret's new dress is spattered in blood and she looks horrified.

Did anyone see that coming? Nucky and Margaret step out, head out to a nightcap and bang - almost shot by the youngest member of the D'allesio gang. But an assassination attempt in the middle of the Boardwalk after a show? Yikes. We knew the D'allesios are a brazen bunch - last episode they robbed Nucky's casino and almost killed his brother. Let's get right to it - the assassination attempt on Nucky. Nucky spent most of the episode organizing quick retaliation against the D'allesios. Two big moments near the end of the otherwise humdrum "Belle Femme" have changed the course of this show, including one ballsy power move by the almsot unbearably weasly D'allesio brothers and their gang. "Nucky made me an offer" - Jimmy Darmody So I was about 45 minutes into this new episode when I thought, "Something needs to happen.
